Oligotrophus szepligetii
Gall midge Oligotrophus szepligetii
Description
Oligotrophus szepligetii is a gall-forming midge whose larvae cause deformities on the leaves and shoots of Tatarian maple (Acer tataricum). Adult females lay eggs into leaf tissues, and the young larvae induce gall formation, where they develop. This species is distributed across Europe and can occur in higher densities locally. In cases of heavy infestation, the galls may affect the growth of young shoots and reduce the aesthetic value of trees. However, it generally does not significantly impact the overall health of the host tree.
Symptom
Galls appear on infected leaves and shoots as green to reddish swellings, often with a distorted or thickened surface. As the larvae develop, the galls harden and turn brown.
