Lophodermium pinastri

Pine needle cast

Description

The fungus is not a pathogen; it infects already dead brown needles. The symptoms of needle infection that appear as early as September are caused by other pathogens such as Lophodermium seditiosum. However, these are small yellowish spots that gradually grow and get brown. During next spring and summer (a year after the start of infection), on shed needles appear black dots and stripes. At that time L. pinastri infects brown needles. Later in summer typical boat-like fruiting bodies begin to be formed. Needles infected by L. pinastri also have characteristic thin transverse stripes formed by the black fungal mycelium. The needles infected in the spring fall off.

Symptom

Black dots, visible transverse strips on the needles.
