Cyclaneusma minus
Cyclaneusma needle cast
Description
This is a needle cast disease. The fungus is a weak pathogen; however, it is widespread all over the world. The infection of needles occurs in winter months though the first symptoms of the infection appear in summer, when the needles begin to turn yellow and fall off prematurely. From September until winter, fruiting bodies (apothecia) are formed on dead needles on the ground as well as on needles still attached to twigs. These are creamy white, after becoming wet they form small pads breaking in on needle epidermis. The broken epidermis reveals the white pads as an open pair of doors. Infection can be severe.
Symptom
Needle necrosis and white window-shaped fruiting bodies on needles.
