Coleosporium spp.
Pine needle rust
Description
Little orange heaps on needles are formed by spores (aeciospores) – haplophase. They are placed in a receptacle under the needle epidermis which is broken by them and as a result, each receptacle seems to be surrounded by a transparent epidermis collar. The developmental cycle of the rust is relatively complicated. To be developed, it usually needs another intermediate host (Petasites spp., Campanula spp., Tusilago spp., Senecio spp., etc.) on which are developed dicariotic urediospores, teleutospores, and basidiospores. Needle rust of pines occasionally destroys enough foliage to retard the growth of young trees, but usually little damage is caused.
