Andricus polycerus

Gall wasp Andricus polycerus

Description

A 10–15 mm long cup-shaped, monolocular bud gall which bears 3–6 pointed, curved spines on the up per rim. Usually green in colour, later becoming brown. The larval cell is 5–7mm long and located in the woody body of the gall. The adult emerges in spring. Only a asexual generation is known. Found on Quercus robur, Q. petraea and Q. pubescens. It prefers younger, shrub-sized trees. A southern species, usually not abundant.
