Andricus coronatus

Gall wasp Andricus coronatus

Description

Monolocular bud gall 6–12 mm high and 8–15 mm across with a crown of 4–7 shorter spines and upper surface. The gall is at first yellow, later brown. Only one larva usually lives in gall and it leaves the gall through an opening on lateral side, which is similar to the galls of Andricus quercustozae and A. coriarius. It differs from them in its size, which is about 1 cm. It is widely distributed and common in Central and South eastern Europe. Only asexual generation is known.
