Stigmella aceris
Scarce maple pigmy
Description
Scarce maple pigmy Stigmella aceris is a small moth in the Nepticulidae family, with a wingspan of 3.7–4.7 mm. It is found across Europe. The moth has two generations per year, flying in May-June and again in August. The larvae primarily feed on Acer species, including Acer campestre (field maple), Acer platanoides (Norway maple), and Acer tataricum (Tatarian maple). They create narrow mines on the leaves, often filling the full width of the mine with frass in the early stages. While Stigmella aceris does not significantly harm the health of the tree, its mining activity can reduce the aesthetic appeal, creating brown and translucent patches on leaves that detract from their appearance.
Symptom
Leaves show narrow, winding mines filled with frass. The mines may sometimes appear as brown, blotchy patches.
