Phyllonorycter issikii

Lime leaf miner

Description

Adult is brownish moths with a wingspan of 7–8 mm. Moths fly from the end of June till the middle of July. Larvae make typical elliptical mines in the lower side of leaves. The damage can be very severe. The larvae pupate in mine. Presence of many leaf mines may leads to a considerable reduction in the ornamental value of trees. The species is not native to Europe but was first described in Japan (1963) from where it spread through Korea, Russia and the Ukraine to Eastern and Central Europe. Common in many Central European countries.

Symptom

Mine in the shape of a round oblong spot on the underside of the leaf. Visible at the top as a silvery spot. The underside of the mine is brownish, pulling the leaves together, causing them to bend slightly. Dung on a kick in one corner of a mine.
