Lasioptera rubi
Gall midge Lasioptera rubi
Description
Lasioptera rubi is a species of gall midge (Cecidomyiidae - they are small, delicate flies) that specifically infests plants of the Rubus genus, which includes raspberries and blackberries. The larvae of this insect feed on plant tissues, causing the formation of galls on the stems and canes. These galls can weaken the plant, reducing its vigor and fruit yield and may causes partial des-iccation of stems, which may break due to strongwinds. Adult females lay their eggs on the stems of Rubus plants, typically near the buds or wounds. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the plant tissue, where they feed and cause the formation of galls. The larvae and pupae remain inside these galls, protected from predators and environmental conditions. Adult midges emerge from the galls in spring to mate and continue the cycle. Control measures often involve monitoring for gall formation and removing infested plant parts to limit spread.
Symptom
Galls are round or oval, while they can have various irregularities in shape. The color of the galls can range from green to brown, depending on the age of the gall and the stage of growth.
