Blumeriella jaapii
Cherry leaf spot
Description
The fungus overwinters on shed leaves, the reproductive spores (ascospores) are released from the leaves into the air in wet weather in the new leaf flushing time. The fungus infects young cherry leaves during rainy weather. It enters the leaf through stomata found in the lower leaf surface. First symptoms become visible after 4-5 days, as small white dots on the underside of the leaves. These spots develop into brown blotches during 7-8 days. Infected leaves turn yellow and fall down before autumn. Similar, but clearly bordered spots which fall off later (perforation of leaves) are caused by the fungus Stigmina carpophila. Cherry leaf spot, caused by Blumeriella jaapii, is one of the major diseases of cherry orchards.
Symptom
Rusty small spots on the leaves. They become larger as season progress.
