Thelephora terrestris

Smothering fungus

Description

Fruiting bodies are usually formed on the ground surface. They have a conchoidal shape and they are leathery brown, hairy to spiny, and with smooth hymenium. Brackets are formed in several layers one above the other and they use the surrounding plant material, living or died one, as a mechanical support. Thus, young seedlings can be wrapped and smothered as a result of too close growth.

Fruiting bodies are usually formed on the ground surface.
