Phyllonorycter klemannella

Dark alder midget

Description

The larvae of Phyllonorycter klemannella, a moth belonging to the Gracillariidae family, feed on the leaves of Alnus glutinosa and Alnus incana. They create tentiform mines on the lower surface of the leaves, positioned between two side veins, often far from the midrib. The leaf is swollen and light green above the site of the mine. Sometimes multiple mines can be found on a single leaf. Pupation occurs within a white cocoon inside the mine. This moth species is found throughout Europe.
