Phyllodecta (= Phratora) vitellinae

Leaf beetle Phyllodecta vitellinae

Description

Also known under the name Phratora (= Phyllodectavitellinae. Nice, 5-7 mm long, metallic shiny blue beetle. Black larvae feed on the lower side of leaves so that they consume preferentially parenchymal tissues. Later they damage the leaf that way that only veinlets are left. Adults perform maturation feeding on leaves causing significant damages too. Pest is common in lowlands. It ranks among the most abundant and forestry-most important European members of the genus and of the whole family of Chrysomelidae. Under favourable conditions, it reproduces often on a mass scale and then can heavily damage mainly young trees. Similar damage is caused by Phratora (= Phyllodecta) laticollis.

Symptom

Black larvae feed on the lower side of leaves. They consume preferentially parenchymal tissues. Only veinlets are left.
