Description

Phragmidium rubi-idaei is a rust fungus specific to raspberry (Rubus idaeus), where it develops five spore stages during the season and overwinters as teliospores on canes. It is widespread across Europe and occurs mainly in moist habitats with alternating weather conditions. Spermogonia, aecia, uredinia, and telia are formed on leaves of primocanes and fruiting canes, occasionally also on petioles, sepals, and rarely on drupelets of fruits. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation, which can weaken host shrubs and reduce fruit yield, though the overall harmfulness is usually moderate. The species is sometimes confused with Phragmidium bulbosum, which occurs on other Rubus species such as blackberries and differs in spore morphology and host range.

Symptom

Orange to brownish pustules on upper or lower leaf surfaces; heavily affected leaves may show shot-hole effect or fall prematurely. There are practicaly no differences in the symptoms between Phragmidium rubi-idaei and Phragmidium bulbosum
