Description

Common periphyllus aphid Periphyllus testudinaceus is typically found on the young growth, leaves, and leaf petioles of various maple species within the Aceraceae family. It can be observed on trees such as field maple (Acer campestre), Norway maple (Acer platanoides), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), and occasionally on horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastaneum). During autumn, sexual forms develop, and after mating, the oviparae lay eggs that overwinter. Ants are often seen attending to Periphyllus testudinaceus colonies. This species is found across Europe and it already has been introduced to North America.
