Cryptomyzus ribis

Currant aphid

Description

There are blisters or pseudo-galls formed on the infested leaves. The leaves take on very characteristic coloration. On black currant, the blisters are yellowish green, on red currant and white currant wine-red. The adults are 1.0-2.0 mm long, elongated, pale yellow to bright orange in colour. The females lay eggs during the autumn on the shoots of currant. The eggs overwinter. They hatch in the spring and aphid colonies then become established on the underside of the leaves.  During the summer some individuals migrate to the secondary hosts (Lamium spp., Stachys spp.). The red currant cultivars are preferred.

Symptom

The leaves are swollen and turn a light ocher to red. Aphids live on the underside of the leaves.
