Panonychus ulmi
European red mite
Description
Panonychus ulmi is a widespread spider mite species, considered a significant pest of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs in Europe. It overwinters in the egg stage on twigs near buds, with larvae emerging in early spring to feed on developing leaves. Several generations can occur per year, especially in warm, dry conditions. Infestation leads to discoloration, curling, and premature leaf drop, reducing photosynthetic capacity and weakening tree vitality. The species is polyphagous, recorded from hundreds of host plants including apple, pear, plum, cherry, walnut, hazel, elm, poplar, maple, and many others.

Tiny red mites on the underside of leaves; foliage turns bronze, curls, and falls off prematurely.
