Erysiphe adunca
Willow powdery mildew
Description
Erysiphe adunca is a powdery mildew fungus parasitizing mainly willows (Salix spp.) and poplars (Populus spp.). It forms a thin white mycelial coating on both sides of the leaves, where later dark fruiting bodies develop. The fungus spreads by wind-borne conidia during the growing season and may persist from spring until autumn. It is widespread throughout Europe, occurring wherever willows and poplars grow. Intensity of infestation is usually not severe, but under favorable conditions the leaves can be almost completely covered, which reduces their ornamental value and may weaken their overall appearance.
Symptom
Whitish patches of powdery coating on both sides of the leaves; later numerous black dots (fruiting bodies) appear within the mildew.
