Eriophyes convolvens
Spindle leaf edge mite
Description
The spindle leaf edge mite Eriophyes convolvens causes a distinctive type of damage. This species is know also under the names as Stenacis convolvens or Stenacis euonymi. Infested Euonymus leaves (spindle tree) show significant curling of the leaf edges upwards. Leaf discoloration does not occur, so the leaves remain green. Often, entire sections of branches are affected, rather than just individual leaves. Despite the visual impact on the plant, its growth is not affected and anly aesthetical tree value can be lowered. This mites have a worm- or spindle-shaped body measuring only 0.1 to 0.2 mm in length and 20-50 µm in width. Identifying them requires a microscope, and precise species identification typically requires specialist expertise. Several generations occur annually, with overwintering usually in buds or bark crevices. In spring, they colonize and feed on young leaves, resulting in the observed damage. The damage primarily affects the appearance of the plant without impairing its growth. Early pruning of affected branch sections is recommended as a preventive measure.
