Amphimallon burmeisteri
Chafer Amphimallon burmeisteri
Description
Amphimallon burmeisteri is a beetle species from the family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Melolonthinae. This species is distributed in central and southern Europe, including Austria, Croatia, France, Hungary, Italy, Czech Republoic, Slovakia etc. Adults emerge during their swarming period, typically in late spring and early summer.
The larvae, known as chafer grubs, develop in the soil, feeding on plant roots, which can lead to a decline in plant vitality. They are particularly harmful to agricultural crops and occasionally young trees. The feeding activities of the larvae can weaken the host plants, reducing their growth rate and, in severe cases, leading to plant death.
Adults primarily feed on leaves but are less harmful compared to the larvae. Feeding of adults can impact the aesthetic appearance of affected trees and plants, especially in parks and gardens.
Symptom
Larvae feed on roots, causing yellowing and wilting of plants. Infested areas may show stunted or dead plants. Roots are missing. Adults feed on leaves, creating irregular holes along the edges. Adults can be found on the levaes. Very similar to the close relatives as Amphimallon solstitiale or Amphimallon assimile.
