Yponomeuta padella, commonly known as the Orchard Ermine Moth, is a species of moth belonging to the family Yponomeutidae. This moth is known for its distinctive appearance, characterized by white wings with numerous black spots. The larvae of Yponomeuta padella are particularly fascinating as they construct communal silken webs on various host trees (mainly on Prunus spinosa and Crataegus spp.), often creating a striking visual effect by enveloping branches in a white webbing. These webs serve both as shelter and a means of protection from predators. Yponomeuta padella is found in various habitats across Europe and parts of Asia. Larvae can cause damage to host trees, particularly fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. The larvae often defoliating entire branches or sections of trees. While the damage caused by Yponomeuta padella may not usually result in the death of the host tree, severe infestations can weaken the plant, reduce its ability to photosynthesize, and impact its overall health. This can lead to reduced fruit production and affect also the aesthetic value of ornamental shrubs.
