Description

Taphrina kruchii is a fungal pathogen affecting holm oak (Quercus ilex), leading to the formation of "witches' brooms." This fungus is widely distributed in Mediterranean regions, including southern Europe and parts of North Africa. It stimulates dormant buds, causing dense clusters of shoots with small, pale leaves. Infected branches often exhibit red discoloration, making affected areas of the canopy noticeable from a distance. While the fungus primarily impacts the tree's appearance, severe infections can lead to defoliation and reduced vitality.

Symptom

Affected leaves are swollen and reddened. Infected shoots form dense clusters known as witches' brooms.
