Description

Stephanitis takeyai, known as the Andromeda lace bug, is a pest species originating from Japan, where it primarily infests Pieris japonica (Japanese andromeda). It has spread to Europe and North America via the plant trade and now poses a threat to ornamental gardens. Besides Pieris, it can also feed on rhododendrons (Rhododendron spp.) and azaleas. Adults measure about 3–4 mm, with lacy, black-and-white patterned wings and a rounded pronotum. Nymphs are dark and spiny in appearance.

The insect completes several generations annually, with eggs overwintering in leaf tissue. Both adults and nymphs pierce leaves to extract sap, causing chlorophyll loss. Damaged leaves develop mottled discoloration and may drop prematurely, leading to reduced photosynthesis and stunted growth. The pest's activity is most severe on plants in sunny locations, where it can significantly reduce the ornamental value of affected shrubs.

Symptom

Leaves show mottled discoloration, dark excrement, and feeding punctures, primarily on the undersides. Severely affected leaves may curl, deform, or drop prematurely.
