Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii
Rhizosphaera needle cast
Description
The needles are infected in spring and first symptoms show in late summer. First, yellow stains appear on the needles, later in autumn and winter changing colour to brown or purple-brown. One of the symptoms is also a distinctive constriction of needles. The necrotic needles fall off the following spring or summer. The symptoms are first visible in the lower part of canopy and then spread to the whole canopy in 5–7 years. Needles of the latest growth year are most susceptible to the infection, but in case of drought or SO2 pollution stress older age classes are infected, too.
Symptom
At first, yellow spots appear on the needles, which change color to brown to purple-brown during autumn and winter.
