Phyllonorycter nicellii
Hazel leaf-miner
Description
Hazel leaf-miner Phyllonorycter nicellii is a small moth in the Gracillariidae family with a wingspan of 7–8 mm. Found across most of Europe, except for the Balkan Peninsula and the Mediterranean islands, this species is common and primarily targets Corylus avellana (hazel) and Corylus colurna. The larvae create distinctive mines on the underside of hazel leaves, forming long, arched mines between leaf veins. P. nicellii has two generations per year, with adults active in May and August. The larvae develop within the leaf mines, and the pupal stage overwinters inside the cocoon.
Symptom
Hazel leaves display long, arched, blister-like mines on the underside, often leaving a central green patch. Multiple mines can lead to reduced photosynthesis and early leaf drop.
