Phellinus igniarius

Willow bracket

Description

Willow bracket is one of the most damaging tinder fungi. The fruiting bodies are perennial, on the lengthwise section often of a regular triangular shape to irregularly hoof-like one. They grow only on broadleaves from spring until autumn. The mycelium causes heartwood fibrous white rot with black lines and it penetrates into sapwood too. The attacked trees break under the influence of stronger wind. The infection enters the tree through branch stumps, cracks caused by frost and wounds.
