Ophiostoma novo-ulmi
Dutch elm disease
Description
Dutch elm disease is one of the most serious diseases of tree species. The first pandemic wave caused by O. ulmi hit Central Europe and North America in 1920-1940, the second one caused by more aggressive O. novo-ulmi came in 1980 and has lasted until now. It is a tracheomycosis disease with typical symptoms such as leaf withering, leaf chlorosis and turning brown, at first dying of only a few branches, and dying of the whole tree during only 2 months or up to 5 years. On the lengthwise cut of the infected trunk is found a typical brown ringlet.
