Flammulina velutipes
Velvet foot
Description
The cap is arched or with a lump, smooth, yellow to orange-brown, slimy when moist, 1-6 cm wide. The border is of a paler yellowish colour. The stem is full and firm, dark brown and velvet at the basis, 2-10 cm long and 0.3-1.0 cm thick. Fruiting bodies grow in dense clusters from late autumn and during winter. As one of few fungus species, it survives early frosts. It grows as a parasite on living, weakened and dying trees; the gateway for infection are wounds, broken branches etc. The mycelium causes white rot of affected wood.
