Description

The powdery mildew Erysiphe berberidis overwinters on evergreen mahonias on the leaves, where it is maintained even during the winter. Otherwise, mycelium usually overwinters on fallen leaves under trees. During the first half of summer, the conidial phase is formed, and the conidia - spores are the main source of spreading the infection during the growing season. Ideal conditions are higher air humidity, temperature above 20 °C and moderate air movement. In the first half of summer, the new mycelium also grows on other deciduous hosts (for example, Berberis spp.) in the form of a white floury coating. At the end of summer and autumn, the mycelium is most prominent and often grows even on newly grown shoots. The symptoms are very noticeable and can only hardly be confused with other diseases.
