Dasineura kellneri

Larch gall midge

Description

The brachyblasts on larch twigs are swollen and covered by resin. Many brachyblasts are transformed into these “galls” and have fewer and shorter needles, than healthy ones. Some damaged brachyblasts may not sprout or survive in the year following damage. Some stands can be heavily infested by this insect. The larvae of the pest are living inside the gall. They are solitary, orange red. They hibernate in the gall, and pupate there in early spring. Univoltine. This species is abundant in Central Europe.
