Cydia strobilella

Spruce cone moth

Description

Cydia strobilella, also known as the spruce cone moth or spruce seed moth, is a small moth of the family Tortricidae with a wingspan of 10–15 mm. It is found throughout Europe, Canada, and the northern United States. Adult moths fly from April to June, depending on the location. The larvae primarily feed on the seeds of coniferous trees such as Picea abies (Norway spruce), Abies alba (silver fir), Picea omorika, and Pinus sylvestris. Prefered host is Norway spruce. As a major pest of spruce, the larvae tunnel into cones, consuming seeds and reducing seed production. Damage is particularly severe in spruce plantations, what can affect forest regeneration.

Symptom

Cones show premature opening, with no visible external damage. Occasionally, round exit holes can be seen on the surface of the cones.
