Coenorrhinus aequatus
Apple fruit rhynchites
Description
Coenorrhinus aequatus (= Tatianaerhynchites aequatus), commonly known as the apple frui weevil, is a beetle that primarily affects apple trees, although it can also infest other fruit trees. It belongs to the family Curculionidae (weevils). The adult beetles are small, typically measuring about 3-4 mm in length. They are usually brown or black with a distinctive snout. The adult weevils emerge in the spring and begin feeding on the leaves of pear trees. Adults can cause small holes in fruits. While the primary damage is typically to the leaves, the feeding activity of the adult weevils can also affect the fruit. The adult weevils may feed on the developing fruit, creating small puncture wounds or holes. These feeding sites can sometimes lead to secondary infections by pathogens, further compromising the quality of the fruit.
