Aromia moschata

Musk beetle

Description

Aromia moschata, commonly known as the musk beetle, is a metalic green longhorn beetle native to Europe and parts of Asia. It primarily feeds on willows (Salix spp.) but can also infest other deciduous trees, such as poplars and birches. Female musk beetles lay their eggs in crevices of tree bark, primarily on willows. After hatching, the larvae bore into the wood and spend most of their life in this stage, feeding on the inner bark and in the wood. The larval stage lasts for about 1 to 2 years, during which the larvae create long tunnels. The larvae typically pupate closer to the surface of the wood rather than very deep inside, often just under the bark or in the outer layers of the wood. Adult beetles emerge in summer, from June to September. They live for a few weeks, feeding on flowers some plants, feeding on nectar and pollen. Sometimes also on tree sap. Larval activity beneath the bark and within the wood can lead to tree dieback, increased susceptibility to disease, and, in severe cases, tree death. Aromia moschata is not a common species, on many areas rare. Although not generally considered a major pest, large infestations can cause significant damage, particularly to weakened or stressed trees.

Symptom

The exit holes created by Aromia moschata are oval-shaped, typically about 7–12 mm in diameter, as the adult beetles emerge from the wood. Larvae create extensive tunnels or galleries under the bark and deeper inside the wood. Sawdust-like frass is often found near the base of the tree or in cracks in the bark, indicating larval activity. Infested trees, especially willows, may experience branch dieback due to larval feeding. Affected trees sometimes exude sap from areas where larvae are feeding under the bark. The green adult beetles on tree trunk may be present.
