Flea beetles

Description

Small beetles, measuring about 1-3 mm in length, can cause significant damage to young beech leaves and other broadleaf seedlings. These beetles feed by creating small openings in leaves, which can coalesce to form widespread damage in the event of a serious attack. The beetles are equipped with thickened legs, which allow them to jump suddenly and evade predators when disturbed. Although they are well-known as serious pests in agriculture, they can also cause damage to forest nurseries. Two common and dangerous genera of these beetles are Dibolia spp. and Phyllotreta spp., among others.
