Description

On the leaves of Prunus padus (= racemosa) Lam. This tiny, black and white butterfly occasionally reaches outbreak levels and make severe defoliations, whose white caterpillars live in the nests that they spin on tree branches. Whole trees use to be wrapped in a cobweb. It overwinters like an egg. Caterpillars hatch in the spring. Caterpillars usually live gregarious until they pupate (until the end of June). The adults fliy from July to August. It can cause up to 100 % defoliation of tree during gradation. Sometimes it wraps other trees with cobweb fibers too, but it does not cause any damage to them. It never damages any other tree species except Prunus racemosa - fruit trees or any other types of trees. Cobweb fibers and caterpillars or cocoons do not cause allergenic reactions and are harmless to humans.

Symptom

White coatings on the trunks and branches of the sagebrush. Webs are very strong and compact.
