Xanthoria parietina

Common orange lichen

Description

It grows on bark, but also on rocks and concrete, higher humidity is preferable. In the Middle Ages herbalists used the lichen to cure jaundice. Although it is very common in some localities, it does not cause any serious injuries of tree species. It lives on the surface not penetrating into living tissues of the tree. It can be as common to cover whole branches and in that case it can somehow limit transpiration. It can be also considered as an aesthetical problem in orchards.
