Stigmella pyri
Pear-tree pigmy
Description
Pear-tree pigmy Stigmella pyri is a moth in the family Nepticulidae, found across Europe, from Sweden to the Pyrenees, and as far east as Ukraine. This species primarily targets pear trees (Pyrus communis, P. betulifolia, and P. calleryana), where its larvae create characteristic leaf mines. The lifecycle of Stigmella pyri involves two primary larval periods, in early summer and again in early autumn. The larvae feed within the leaves, creating a narrow, winding corridor with black frass that eventually becomes a more compacted blotch. While this mining does not typically cause severe health issues for the host tree, it can significantly affect the tree’s aesthetic value due to the visible damage to the leaves.
Symptom
Infested leaves show narrow, winding corridors with black frass that eventually coil into compact blotches. These mines are primarily visible on both sides of the leaf and cause the leaves to appear blotchy and discolored.
