Septoria pyricola
Fungus Septoria pyricola
Description
Septoria pyricola is a fungal pathogen causing leaf fleck, white spot, or septoriosis of pear. It is the anamorphic (asexual) stage of Mycosphaerella pyri, which represents the sexual stage of the same species. This fungus primarily attacks Pyrus spp., forming necrotic spots on leaves and sometimes on fruits. In Europe, the disease is frequent in Mediterranean countries, where it can lead to premature leaf fall and reduced fruit quality. Infections start in spring from ascospores on fallen leaves, and during the season the fungus spreads via rain-splashed pycnidiospores. Warm and rainy weather in late spring and summer favors its development. Repeated attacks lower the ornamental and production value of pear trees in orchards and gardens.
