It is one of the most colourful species from among the representatives of the genus in Central Europe. Truly exotic looking adults have black elytra with a variable yellow or green-yellow tomentose pattern. The adult beetle is 12-18 mm long. The larva is up to 25 mm long. It lives in galleries under the bark of dying trees, where it develops for 2 years. To pupate, it bores more deeply into wood.
