Sackenomyia reaumurii
Gall midge Sackenomyia reaumurii
Description
Sackenomyia reaumurii is a gall midge that induces distinctive galls on leaves of Viburnum lantana and occasionally on Viburnum maculatum. This monophagous species is widely distributed across Europe. It has one generation per year (univoltine), with larvae overwintering in the soil and adults emerging in spring.
The galls, formed by the larvae on leaf surfaces, reduce the aesthetic value of ornamental shrubs and can mildly disrupt photosynthesis by deforming the leaves. However, the overall impact on the vitality of mature shrubs is generally minimal.
Symptom
Small, raised galls are present on leaf surfaces, often on both sides. Inside each gall is an orange-yellow larva. Vacated galls dry and persist, leaving minor scarring.
