Rosellinia quercina
Root rot of oak
Description
This fungus damages seedlings that are 1-3 years old and grow in wet and cold locations. The infection begins at the delicate roots and the fungus grows into thicker parts. The root neck encircles, and the seedling eventually dies. The first symptom of the infection is yellowing of the leaves on the entire crown, which later turns brown. During wet weather, a white to gray superficial cotton-like mycelium may form on the infected roots and root canal. The hyphae of the fungus infect not only the bark but also the wood, making it brittle. As a result, the seedlings may break at the root neck.
