Rhyacionia buoliana

Pine shoot moth Rhyacionia buoliana

Description

A tiny moth with an 15-16 mm mm wingspan. Adult have light orange-yellow heads and thoraces, grey abdomens and light reddish orange forewings mottled with silvery crosslines. Larvae hatch from the middle of June until the beginning of July. They bore into needle cases closest to buds. Later, they bore into the bud itself, damage it and they also overwinter there. In early spring, often as early as April, they move into new buds where they pupate. In a single bud is always found only one larva. Infested buds dry out gradually and trees form deformed compensatory pipe-shaped bent sprouts (bayonets). This insect is a pest mainly in the production of lumber, nursery trees and Christmas trees that are longneedled pines.
