Protopulvinaria pyriformis
Pyriform scale
Description
Protopulvinaria pyriformis, commonly known as pyriform scale, is a soft scale insect of tropical and subtropical origin. It develops on the leaves and young shoots of host plants, feeding by sucking sap. Females are oval-shaped or round-shaped, reddish-brown with radial stripes, and produce a white ovisac. The species reproduces mainly by parthenogenesis, and has 2 generations per year in southern Europe. Host plants include avocado and citrus, but it can occur on ornamental and woody plants. Excessive honeydew excretion promotes the growth of sooty moulds, which reduce photosynthesis and can weaken the host plant. In warmer parts of Europe, its occurrence is more frequent, especially on cultivated avocado trees and in greenhouses.
