Popillia japonica
Japanese beetle
Description
This is a species of scarab beetle. The adult measures about 15 mm. It has iridescent copper-colored elytra and a green thorax and head. It comes from Japan. It is not very dangerous and does not cause damages in Japan, where it is controlled by natural predators. However, in North America and Europe, where it was artificially introduced, it is a noted pest of many tree species. The adult beetles damage plants by skeletonizing the foliage and damaging fruits. Larvae feed on the roots of grasses and other plants.
