Planchonia arabidis
Pittosporum pit scale
Description
Planchonia arabidis, commonly known as the pittosporum pit scale, is a sap-feeding insect from the Asterolecaniidae family. It is widespread across Europe and the Mediterranean region, and it has been introduced to other areas like North America and the Caribbean. This species is particularly known for causing damage to ornamental plants.
Symptom
The insect induces characteristic pit galls, often found on the midrib of leaves, but also on stems. These galls form as a result of the insect's feeding activity, which disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to deformation of leaves and overall plant decline. In severe infestations, the galls and feeding damage can significantly reduce the plant's health and ornamental value.
