Description

Phytomyza kaltenbachi is a leaf-mining fly developing mainly on Clematis species (C. vitalba, C. alpina, C. recta). It is considered an oligophagous species within the family Ranunculaceae. The larvae form long, initially narrow and whitish leaf mines that later turn brown and gradually widen, showing irregular margins and visible feeding lines. Pupation occurs inside the mine, in a chamber near the lower epidermis. The species is probably univoltine, with larvae active between June and August. It occurs across central and parts of northern and southeastern Europe, from Denmark and the UK to Poland. Its impact on plant vitality is minimal, though heavy infestations may reduce the aesthetic value of ornamental Clematis.
