Pammene aurita

Sycamore piercer

Description

Pammene aurita, commonly known as the sycamore piercer, is a moth species within the family Tortricidae. This species is native to Europe. The adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 14–15 mm and are active during July and August, primarily from late afternoon onwards. They are often attracted to light sources during these periods. The larvae develop within the seeds of sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), feeding internally and creating small exit holes upon emergence. While this seed injury can reduce seed viability, it typically does not significantly impact the overall health or aesthetic appearance of mature sycamore trees.

Symptom

Infested sycamore seeds exhibit small exit holes, indicating larval feeding within the seed. They lose ability to germinate.
