Orthosia gothica

Hebrew character

Description

The Hebrew character (Orthosia gothica) is a nocturnal moth from the family Noctuidae. It flies primarily in March and April, though in some regions it may be active later. The caterpillar of O. gothica is green, dotted with yellow, with yellowish-white dorsal and subdorsal lines. A broad white spiracular line with a dark upper edge runs along its side. It feeds on a wide variety of plants, including willow (Salix), blackthorn (Prunus), birch (Betula), hazel (Corylus), apple (Malus), raspberry (Rubus), and many others. Damages are most frequent in poplar forest stands. The species overwinters as a pupa before emerging as an adult in early spring. In terms of habitat, Orthosia gothica is found in semi-open environments such as forests, hedges, and stream margins, and it is widespread across Europe. Usually less abundant than related species of the genus Orthosia.
