Ophiostoma piceae

Ophiostoma piceae

Description

The primary blue discolouration of wood, occurring even before the haulage of the timber from the loading site, is greatly contributed to by the Ascomycotina and Deuteromycotina class fungi. A very common sapstaining fungus is O. piceaecreating black radial lines on the cut. Microscopic observation reveals long bottleneck perithecia and brushy coremia present in the cut depressions. Their spores are airborne or spread by bark insect vectors to other tree trunks.
