Ocnerostoma piniariella

Description

Ocnerostoma piniariella is a small moth of the family Yponomeutidae, found widely across Europe. With a wingspan of around 9 mm, the forewings are slender and shiny light grey, while the hindwings are darker grey. This species is closely related to Ocnerostoma friesei. The larvae primarily feed on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), tunneling into the needles and consuming the inner tissues. This feeding activity weakens the tree by reducing photosynthetic ability, especially in cases of heavy infestations. The moth has a single generation per year, with adults emerging and flying from June to August.

Symptom

Infested pine trees show hollowed, brown needles due to larval feeding. There are light-colored sections on the needles within which a larva may be visible when held up to the light. Severe infestations can lead to needle browning and premature needle drop, impacting tree vigor.
